Waitakere Gold clinch semifinal spot

Waitakere Gold ran away 12-3 with a pass to the U14 Boys semifinals, but it was no easy feat in the first half. Waikato made sure to put up a fight, opening the game with the first goal of the match by Sam Eddy in the first minute of play. In a game of multiple counter attack opportunities, the scoreboard went back and fourth with endless goals. The final quarter was even at 2-all , with goals to  Waitakere's #3 Daniel Cameron and #2 Zach Monk, and Waikato's #7 Stanford Pogai scoring in the final 18 seconds of the period.

The second quarter seemed like a repeat of the first; several opportunities from both ends saw the scoreline increase further. Cameron took the lead for Waitakere with his second goal early in the second quarter. His teammates followed, seizing the opportunity to lead by three goals, thanks to #4 Eric Ah-Tani and a second goal to Monk. As the scoreboard read 5-2 inching closer to the half, Waikato were able to execute one more offensive opportunity with 52 seconds left on the board, with #12 Brodie Ryan adding to his teams chances narrowing the scoreline 5-3.

That was the last time they were able to pull through with their attack, however, as Waikato failed to score in the second half, giving Waitakere every opportunity to run away with the game. And that's exactly what they did.

Waitakere's #7 Matthew Viecelich scored two goals in less than 30 seconds to see his team swim away with a 7-3 lead. Waitakere's Cameron, Phillips, Viecelich and Monk all scored again in the final quarter, with a strong 12-3 finish to earn their way into the semifinals.

  1. My oh my, how times have changed. Back when I was a younger spriteling, back in my heyday, this is how sports journalism was done. No silly pictures, or over dramatised turtle burger, just the facts! And how I love facts! Here's a fact for you, for free: water polo is going places! Jeff with a "G" out!
