Hutt proved the better-prepared of the two teams, with Jerome McGuinness and Mataio Pou scoring one each.
Cameron Hayes won the swim-off for Hutt, letting Rory McJarrow convert to push Hutt out to a three goal lead.
Marist readjusted, scoring three goals on the trot to come back into the match. Hutt scored another thanks to McJarrow and edged into the lead again. 3-4 at half-time.
A strong quarter from Marist saw left-hander Matt Lewis net two, a penalty from Phillip Hargraves, and some solid defence keeping Hutt to one goal. Marist took the lead, 6-5 one quarter to go.
Marist took advantage of a 6 on 5, letting Braedan Drennan take the honours of scoring. A time-out from Hutt saw them earn a 6 on 5, and do just as Marist had done, letting Cameron Hayes score. 7-6 in favour of Marist.
Phillip Hargraves scored a goal for Marist to make it 8-6, one minute left on the clock.
A nail-biting final 37 seconds saw Hutt's Jack Ross convert to bring the scores to 8-7. Marist ran out the possession, knowing Hutt had utilised both their time-outs. With 7 seconds to play, Hutt were desperate to score but time couldn't allow - Marist took the bronze medal.
