4 games took place at West Wave this morning, one of which decided who went through to a quarter final.
Marist Red vs. Mountfort Wolf Pack
The Marist Red Under 18 Men walked over Mountfort Wolf Pack in a convincing 3-18 win. Conor Patrerson scored 5, his brother Liam 3, and left-hander Conrad Smith 3.
Palmerston North Boys' High School vs. Waitakere Gold
PNBHS and Waitakere Gold have battled it out in a clash that had potential to cause count-backs and dependency on results from other games. And it did just that. The score was 5-6 heading into the final quarter, Waitakere Gold were staring down the barrel of a PNBHS comeback. J. Eagle scored two, and G. Ritani scored one to bring Palmy home to an 8-7 win.
These two teams now teeter on the result of the Marist Blue vs. Southland/Waikato game tonight. If Marist Blue win, then PNBHS and Waitakere will be on even points. A count-back will occur which will see Waitakere Gold advance to the quarter-finals. If Southland/Waikato win, PNBHS will advance to the quarter-finals.
Canberra Academy B vs. CDM Polo 2
The first half saw CDM Polo 2 score 10 unanswered goals, evenly spread across the team. A strange second half saw only one exclusion and two time-outs - no goals.
CDM Polo 2 advance to the quarter-finals as top qualifiers for the D pool.
Golden Hawks vs. Tauranga
This game would decide who advances to the quarter-finals as second qualifiers from the D pool. A close encounter saw the Golden Hawks fall to Tauranga this morning.
The Golden Hawks started strongly with two goals from Tom Oolders. A goal from Tauranga's Richard Sneddon brought the scores to 2-1 after the first six minutes.
An even second quarter saw the Golden Hawks hold their lead. Tauranga's Tristan Houghton and Cayne Dew scoring one each.
A combination of strong offense from Tauranga and a weak all round quarter from the Golden Hawks saw Tauranga score four goals and race out to a 3 goal lead.
A goal from Sean McKenzie in the final quarter saw the Golden Hawks quarter-final hopes sink, bringing the scores to 4-8 with only two minutes to play. An exclusion on Tauranga's J. Burtenshaw allowed Wilson Longhurst to score for the Hawks. A turnover saw a repeat of the previous play, with Burtenshaw excluded and Longhurst scoring to bring the scores to credible 6-8.
Tauranga will advance to the quarter-finals.
