Under 16 Girls in close game: Waitak Gold vs. NSW CHS

Waitakere Gold have had a tight match with New South Wales Combined High Schools in the Under 16 Girls division at Sacred Heart today.

The first quarter saw New South Wales' B. Humby scoring two goals to Waitakere's Sophie Jones' one.

Humby opened the scoring again in the second quarter to push her team's lead out to two. Jones slotted another back on NSW. A lapse in concentration let NSW throw in another two goals to head 2-5 into the second half.

NSW retained their 3 goal buffer in the third quarter, where the referees took no nonsense - calling seven exclusions.

Some stern words from Waitakere Gold coach Chris Browne in the quarter break saw Waitakere come out firing in the final quarter. Sophie Jones made her tally 6 as she slotted two more past NSW goal-keeper L. MacLeod.

NSW coach E. Singleton used the second of her two time-outs with 35 seconds left on the clock and a 7-8 lead.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: An intimate time out with 35 seconds left on the clock

NSW lost possession giving Waitakere Gold but a few seconds for a hail-Mary shot which was unsuccessful, halting the scores at 7-8.

"It was an awesome game, both teams played amazing." said Waitakere Gold coach Chris Browne. "Some awesome goalie work by both goalies kept both teams in it - real close."

Waitakere have two wins, and now one loss in their pool.

"Just a few unfortunate missed opportunities kinda separated it - and that was it." said Browne.

Waitakere have one pool game left to play against Tauranga B.
