Both teams managed to capitalise on 6-5 opportunities in the first quarter, seeing Tauranga lead at the break 4-3.
Some wise words from coach Danny Kayes saw Tauranga race out to an 8-5 lead in the second quarter.
Another burst from Tauranga in the third saw them shut out NSW CHS, 11-6 into the final quarter.
A 5-1 final quarter in favour of Tauranga made the score 16-7 at the final whistle.
"We didn't really know what to expect - they're a NSW team so we haven't seen them before." said Tauranga's Justin Pickering. "We started off a bit slow in the first quarter, but as the game went on we really turned up the pace. We got a few fast-breaks and good set piece plays, we got the result we wanted."
