The U16 Girls competition is proving to be tougher than initially thought. Several teams are pushing for those top 8 places in the quarter finals to be held at Dio tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. In the final rounds of pool-play, Canberra Academy A matched up very well with the Rotorua Girls, pushing them to a 5-5 draw by the end of full time. Canberra’s #5 T. Sinclair top scored for the game with 3 goals, closely followed by fellow teammate #9 L. Seberry, Rotorua’s #2 Aimee Cogger and #10 A. Bird, who all put 2 goals to their name.
In yet another close game, the Harbour City girls narrowly edged over the North Harbour B Side 7-6. Wellington’s Harbour City centre forward #7 Ciara Flynn slotted in 4 goals to her name and top scored for the game. Flynn’s fellow NZU15 teammates from the opposition, North Harbour #3 Shannon Hughes and #11 Kaitlin Howarth Dawson also showed their scoring potential, contributing to North Harbours scoreline with one goal each.
Likewise, the second tier Marist Blue girls, took the Aussie’s by storm with an impressive 6-5 win over the Canberra Academy A girls. Again, the NZU15 Girls from the Marist side, Gabby MacDonald and Caitlin Mary Parker-Allen contributed to half of the team’s 6 goals.
Waitakere Gold, however, had an easy win 14-0 over Tauranga’s B side, with #11 Georgia Rafe and #4 I. Ieremia each earning themselves hat-tricks in preparation for the tougher teams they will face in tomorrow’s quarter finals.
The top contenders that are all pushing for spots in the final four include NSW CHS, North Harbour A, NSW Country, Tauranga A, Marist Red and Queensland. However, Canberra Academy A, Waitakere Gold, Waikato and Harbour City are teams that without a doubt are going to make any game difficult, and no matchup is a dead certainty in this competition anymore.
