Weeks in the water beckon for four Marist boys

Four Auckland Marist boys have started their water polo festivities today, beginning with two wins in the Under 20 Mens' division.

Chris Cormack, Phillip Hargraves, Callum Lane, and goalie Denzel Niuelua have weeks of water polo on the horizon, having started today with the Under 20 competition where the boys will be playing up a grade. Next week will see them take the pool for the Under 18 competition, where they look to be favourites. In two and a half weeks they will head off to Turkey as a part of the New Zealand Under 18 team competing at the 2014 FINA Youth Mens' World Championships.

"It's a good opportunity for the four of us to become more familiar with each other, it's been a while since we played together. Lots of back to back games as well - it's gonna be even more hectic over at Worlds." said Callum Lane.

"It's definitely good to get the boys going - getting the game time, experience, and fitness." said Denzel.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges for the younger boys stepping up into Under 20s is the pool length extending from 25m to over 30m.

Phillip Hargraves commented on the extent that the Under 20 and Under 18 competitions were a build-up for the weeks to come; "It's preparing us for the bigger pool at Worlds up in Turkey - so it's getting us match fit so we can push down to 2 meters every offense."

The four boys helped Marist to a 10-5 win over Canberra Academy in the Under 20 Grade this evening, ending the day with two wins up their sleeves.
